Creature sketches
First sketches for a comission. I've only drawn couple of versions of this character and now I'm trying to take it further. It's interesting to see how these ideas evolve when one keeps drawing. I've still got lot of things to try out. We'll just have to wait and see how many versions it takes to get it right.

TURO
I finally got a proper photo of the monster mask as it was in the final movie. Turo V. is coming out this spring :)

Monster hands (or how i learned to relax and love latex)
I though I'd post some progress photos for once. I have to apologize the low quality of these pictures. I happen to work in a very small and very poorly lit apartment, mostly at night in a hurry and suffering from constant sleep deprivation. Well at least with this particular project. So try not to mind the mess and blur and what not.
Here's a life span of a pair of monster hands or gloves that I made for a short movie. These gave me a lot of headache and I'm not really sure if I'm happy with them. I totally ran out of time with these mostly because I was so occupied with the monsters mask at the same time. And ofcourse the mask was the absolute priority number one on my to-do list so when I finally got to the gloves it was two days before we were going to shoot. And I had to make two pairs of gloves.
I built the model with modeling paste on top of a large leather glove. I took some reference from a monster glove I'd done earlier.
Took a mold with silicone building it up layer by layer. Silicone thickener would've been a great help here.
Yeah. Looks delicious.
I only cast the top of each hand because I didn't have time to make two part molds. At this point I was also slowly running out of silicone so I was about to panic. I made mother molds out of plaster and poured in the pigmented fx silicone.
I took the silicone cover of the molds and mounted them on a pair of gloves. Unfortunately the silicone had not entirely cured for some reason. Now was the time to really panic. I cleaned these up with alcohol and soap but they still kept on pushing silicone oil to the surfice. I think I might have measured the stuff wrong somehow. I was really really tired.
These really felt disgusting but since they were firm enough I had no choice but to powder them and ignore sticky surfice. After all they weren't exactly making a mess or anything, they just felt diffenrent than usual.
With the second pair I had to change to stockings and latex. That worked a lot better. I hand sewed the stocking coverings to the gloves and put a few layers of latex and paint on them.
Then I used the mold to cast some texture.
I also cast some nails out of polyurethane plastic.
I cut holes for the nails and pushed them through. Glued them to place with contact glue and finished the edge with latex.
Here's the final product, with textures put on and blended with latex and paint. Not really realistic, but close enough for our purposes. Next time I'm doing something like this I'll start much earlier and use time on the detail.

Monster make up test
It might be just a bit too early to publish this but I can't help myself. We did a first test make up of a monster called Turo today. This was to note any problems we might have with the prosthetics and make up. And there were quite a few things to attend to. He's still missing a fore head piece and some teeth. The hair will be trimmed, the appliance will be toned to a more realistic color, mouth will be made smaller, the appliance as a whole needs to be made thiner so that it will attach to the skin properly. So there's lots of things to do. Still after this test shoot I'm much more confident that we'll get there eventually. I'm so exited right now.

Monster teaser
I hate the fact that I haven't been able to update lately. It's not like I haven't been doing stuff. I've been working on five projects at the same time. They're all still in progress so I have nothing much to upload yet. I should probably try to focus on one project at a time to get things done. It's not like I must work on two cosplays simultaneously.
Anyway, here's a teaser of yet another monster mask. The back of his head is on a mold and shouders and hands are on the way. It's the first time I'm casting silicone and this mask is a second cast. The first one went horribly wrong. Since then I've learned to be quite carefull with this stuff cause I definately don't want to rub uncured silicone off of a mold ever again. Yeah.

Monster in the making part 2
He's starting to look like a moster. This is the first picture of the head worth showing cause he was so ridiculous at first. I'm thinking of posting those pics later though just to show you how something so stupid turned out something great.
The head in progress. Lots of make up work to do.
It's a model for his nose and mouth

Monster in the making part 1
First glove done. I'm anxious to continue but my glue gun over heated and broke. So now i'm waiting to get it fixed and hoping that I can get back to work soon. In the meantime I carved a couple of horns for the head. It's going to look great.

the monster is born
This is a sample of what will eventually become an entire monster costume. I'm working on the head at the moment and really hope it'll work out. I haven't done anything quite this big before so we'll see what happens.
Also some inspiration taken from the amazing John Kenn
And Joshua Ben Longo
